There was a substantial multi day protest/demonstration that essentially projected Mizzou and Columbia as being racially prejudiced against blacks, including black football players. If memory serves there was more than one change in campus administrators.
And in the football world the “alleged racial issues” at Mizzou and in Columbia” provided strong ammunition for competitors for Tiger recruits to engage in negative recruiting of both recruits and their families. I.e. how many families heard about the incidents that transpired and were essentially asked “do you want your son in that environment”.
John Herman, then a hot coaching candidate for what he had accomplished at Houston, publicly said Urban Meyer told him to pass on Mizzou because of the race protest.
It didn’t get a lot of publicity, but the on campus protest and the administrative changes that resulted had an impact on Tiger recruiting.
