rarely settled by exchanging actual stock... instead, the difference between the strike & share price is paid out (times quantity).
Second, you missed my point. A security cannot be bought without it also being sold. So when someone says "$8 billion of put contracts were bought" it implies that $8 billion of contracts were sold as well.
In other words, higher volume... but like a stock, higher *volume* doesn't necessarily tell you a whole lot.
