Pain and suffering is a good example. If your gas company negligently blew up your house and you got 3rd degree burns on half your body and have to live the rest of your life in excruciating pain. Only way to remedy that is with money, so the law says you can get it.
In a defamation case, damage to your reputation is another one.
In a wrongful death case, loss of care, companionship and comfort you would have received from the deceased is another.
