You can't have the Bama's and Ohio States without the Illinois', Purdues, Mississippi States, etc. It just doesn't work. First off, you have to have someone to play, secondly, if only Ohio State, Bama, UGA, Florida, Michigan, etc keep playing each other they all end up some combination of 7-4, 6-5, etc. which means nobody stands out and the allure of being the best over and over wanes. This means your national brand dissipates.

Also, the state schools in the middle (Mizzou, Ole Miss, Arkansas, etc) go up and down pretty regularly. It would take a pretty prolonged period of awfulness to justify booting a large state school with significant alumni.
