Russia may be winning battles, but it is losing the war

What is Russia's objective in invading Ukraine? It is the first step for it in a process intended to reacquire all of the territory that it once held and controlled, at a minimum all of the old USSR.
The primary obstacle to Russia achieving that goal is NATO.
Russia's action in Ukraine have reinvigorated NATO. It has lead to NATO expanding, to become more conscious of Russian ambitions and to take joint action against Russia (joint action once taken is much easier to take thereafter).
Russia may well gain some limited territory in Eastern Ukraine, but it's long term position vis a vie NATO is getting worse. And that will make it far more difficult, if not totally impossible for Putin and his cronies to accomplish their true goals.
