every direction in debates, campaign ads, etc... and yet, there's a mutual unspoken understanding between candidates that it's all part of the game. No one takes it personally because that's the nature of the business during an election.
The same is true with coaching searches. Everyone has their own candidates and agendas and the rhetoric can heat up to a boiling point. A lot is at stake and when controversial candidates are involved it can get REALLY ugly.
Tennessee and Greg Schiano come to mind.
