To answer your question the equation for the period of a pendulum only has two variables.

T=2pi*sqrt(l/g)

If you measure the length of your pendulum and the time for one complete cycle you can calculate the gravitational acceleration. They then calculated it to the known value of gravity.

Simple physics lab that requires no real supplies and is very easy to do.
