IMO, these films are Russian propoganda which have been laying the foundation for what is happening now, by making an appeal to ancient claims, and undermining the legitimacy of the transfer of Russian lands to the Ukraine, which is why Putin criticizes Lenin, Stalin, and Khrushchev. He first wanted to establish the historical ties to the Ukraine, going back 1000 years.
