We should be prepared to send all available military and non-military aid if Russia invades. We should also be prepared to impose unsparing economic and political sanctions on Tsar Putin and his henchmen.
Tsar Putin says he's merely trying to secure his Western border. But if he takes Ukraine, then his western border is with Poland. Would they be next? And then--Germany.
Russia's "security" is not threatened in the slightest by Ukraine, which has no territorial ambitions. The only thing threatened is Tsar Putin's iron grip of dictatorship, as dictatorship is always threatened by the proximity of democracy.
An invasion of Ukraine would destabilize the mostly peaceful world order that has existed throughout the Pax Americana--Since 1945. There have been wars, but they've been small and purely regional. If the Tsar takes Ukraine, it will not be his last move.
Conflicts that start in Europe don't generally stay there anymore. It is in our national interest to do everything in our power, short of boots on the ground, to help Ukraine defend itself.
