in conjunction with others. My initial assessment was gleamed from what interview material there was on Drink at his previous programs. It also involved looking at the programs while he was there and what improvements they made in his specific areas. I did discount Apalachian State other than he didn't crash the car and it performed like you would think it would with competent management.
In regards to his time at Mizzou, he was able to perform better than expected in a covid year where he didn't get to implement his system (his words), had very little practice time, and was given players he was not familiar with.
Expectations were higher in his second year from what he was able to do in year one. With spring and summer practices, his play calling looked very much like the year one. I did not see a system being implemented on the offensive side of the ball. I thought he was a QB whisperer. I am no longer under that impression. He is hell of a recruiter. Does anyone here feel he identified weak points after year one and filled them properly? Coaches stick with a job because they can't do better elsewhere or they believe the program is on a upward trajectory and it will help them if they choose to move later for a better program. I'm not getting that impression (well maybe the first statement).
Most importantly, the problem I have now is that I don't think our program has improved. That's what's most glaring to me. With Pinkel, I saw it most every year, most every couple of games. With Odom, it was small runs but no overall improvement. And at 23 games I should be able identify something. We spent more and have the same results we had with Odom.
So I support Coach Drinkwitz, I want to see him succeed. I'm not as high as I was initially on him.
