They wouldn't. A 16 team would start the second Friday, Saturday (for max tv exposure) in December. The next round would be the third Saturday in December. This year that would have been the 10/11th and 18th. A week off for Christmas and you play the final four with the same end date as this year's CFP championship game.
The better set up would be the first and second weekends in December. You'd be down to 4 teams. Bowl bids would then be released the Sunday of the second round. All 12 teams that lost could still get a bowl bid if they wanted one. Bowls should be reduced and a more restrictive criteria established. Must win 8 games against FBS teams with no more than 4 losses and be 500 or better in your conference. That keeps the utmost importance on the regular season and is a reward for teams that actually achieve something during the regular season. This year approximately 44 teams would have qualified under this criteria without considering wins against lower level teams. So about 16-18 bowl games should be the max PLUS the 16 team CFP.
