It honestly really didn't upset me that we got blown out by ku and Illinois, I expected both and watched both games knowing we were going to get murdered and have no way to compete. I've always said on here the most dangerous thing a program can do is lower the bar of expectations to give incompetents the chance to possibly meet them. Well I no longer have any expectations for MU basketball.
That game looked like a collection of random guys left the playground where they were playing pickup and showed up at the arena. There was no coaching at all, the only thing I can compare it to is the Baylor game right before Quin quit in 2005-06. It looked like we had no game prep, no strategy, no cohesion or any kind of plays, there was no logic or thought given to substitutions, players were free to take whatever shots they wanted, and there was no real attempt to dig out of a hole when we found ourselves in one. We just kind of showed up and played, and lets see what happens. Guys could have easily substituted themselves and I'm kind of surprised we didn't see some of them try and call their own fouls, we looked that uncoached.
I can't believe the box score shows we have 6 assists. If I cared more I'd be inclined to go back and track it, I'm shocked its a higher number than 2 and if it has said 0 I would have thought that was completely reasonable.
Its comically absurd we took 23 three point attempts across 10 different players and not a single one made more than 1. That may be the stat that best summarizes the Cuonzo era.
I don't get what we are doing with Davis and Coleman, and I don't think they do either. Neither one of those guys have any kind of defined role, and actually I bet Gordon is jealous of them because he is probably even less sure what he is supposed to be doing. I'm sure they are thrilled with their use of the transfer portal.
This is the headline on mutigers.com for the game: "Brazile Has Career Night Against Illinois in Braggin' Rights Game". That also may just sum up MU basketball and the AD's approach to it right there. That pretty much captures the essence of what went on last night.
I will say this, kudos to the players in one regard. They play hard and don't mail it in, at least through this point in the season. They aren't nearly talented enough and appear to be largely uncoached, but they give good effort and continue to battle. Sometimes they look like they just ate a **** sandwich during games and certainly don't appear to be having much fun, but they aren't giving up. This era's players are not going to be remembered fondly and I think that is an important distinction that they are at least trying and doing their best to represent MU.
Welp, now its on to getting murdered by SEC teams.....
