that with a heavily mutated variant, vax may fare better due to vax-induced antibodies’ ability to bind to more parts of the virus than infxn-induced Abs."
From what I have read the shot works exclusively by inducing the body to produce the spike proteins from the original covid-19 virus. These foreign bodies, even though the body's own cells were artificially induced to produce them, caused the body's immune system to produce antibodies to bind to those spike proteins.
Natural immunity has been shown to be some 13X more robust in priming the body to fight against covid infections. Speculation is that the immune system recognizes a foreign body (the virus) in more ways than just its spike protein.
I have also read that the Omicron variant has 8 or more(?) mutations to that spike protein, which is why it is more effective at evading pre-existing immunity.
But it would stand to reason that shot induced immunity would be even less robust in spotting a virus with an altered spike protein than would be the case for natural immunity which presumably can recognize more markers of an invasion than just the spike protein.
