Question about defense alignment

Attended the game in person. The deep safety was playing 20 yards behind the line of scrimmage on nearly every play and seldom was involved (except for the ghost he was apparently covering by backpedaling when the ball would be snapped). It seemed like 11 on 10. I am not a coaching expert, just a fan. Is it typical for a safety to be that deep? I couldn't understand why the same alignment was used on third down plays when Kentucky needed less than 20 yards, and especially on inside runs.
