We have an incredibly small population within a short driving distance of campus.
Within the SEC, we have the second-smallest population within 60 miles. This group is typically the core of the fanbase and we just don't have the numbers.
For example, we have 300,000 less people within 60-miles than the next largest, Arkansas - capturing even 5% of this extra would add 15k in attendance. We have a million less people within this radius than LSU, UT, and Florida.
We can pull from KC and St. Louis for big games in good seasons, but those people are always going to be less likely to make a day-trip in lesser situations.
The one positive we do have in our favor is a lack of other major colleges to compete with in our core region. If we build a consistent winner, we can likely pull a larger percentage of these. But a lack of population, even when including KC and STL, will always work against us.
