or Nixon after Watergate or Jimmy Carter after the hostages, or Reagan after the bombing in Beirut, or Wild Bill Clinton after Paula Jones, or GWB five years into Afghanistan, or Barack Obama after fast and furious, bengazhi or Obamacare, for fat Hillary Clinton after her email debacle, or Trump after some of his bad hires, or Joe Biden after… Just about any week of his presidency had said,
“We really screwed that up. I am in charge, I take responsibility. I made terrible mistakes that cost lives, money and and American credibility around the world. I would like to apologize to all the people harmed by my bad decision making. I can assure you that I have along with my administration, learned from these mistakes and have put things in place now to rectify the situation. We will move forward with greater resolve and greater confidence Having seen close up, the consequences of poor decisions.
I ask for your forgiveness and your continued support as we move forward.”
Yes, opposing politicians would have jumped on those comments with both feet. Yes, the press would record the admission as an example of a flawed president.
Notice though, that I did not suggest any of the events changed. Only the acknowledgment after the fact.
Seriously, wouldn’t presidents be better served to acknowledge their mistakes than to double down on deception and deny the obvious? Even the trolls on this board are not defending Biden. No one believes him.
Would you have more respect for someone who admitted his mistake or for someone who made and continues to make preposterous denials and pointing fingers at others?
We see it on this board as well stupid statements are followed with stupider excuses. I have said on here before that a confident and competent person admits his mistakes, a liar, a deceiver and a buffoon will pretend the mistakes were actually planned and beneficial, or failing that, were someone else’s fault.
People make mistakes, even presidents. Some are more serious than others. Some are disastrous. But don’t we deserve to know the truth?
And don’t we deserve to hear it from the president himself?
