My assessment of the Taliban is it is a fundamentalist Moslem movement that believes the appropriate treatment for all non-believers is to simply kill them. By and large, all Americans are non-believers and therefore candidastes for extermination.
The lesson of Afganistan is we can not "deal" with such groups and movements. The only long term solution is to militarily defeat them. Essentially, we have to duplicate what we did in World War II against the Nazis and the Japanese.
The mistake in Afganistan was not getting involved. Had we not, we simply would have been postponing a confrontation. The mistake was not remaking Afgan society as we did in Germany and Japan following World War II.
All that we have accomplished in our time in Afganistan is waste a lot of lives and treasure. The world is not a genetle and peaceful place, largely because it is inhabited by mankind and we are far from a warm, gentle and peaceful species.
The lesson of Afganistan is if we take on task, we need to see it through and do whatever is necessary to prevail. If we don't, we are simply setting the stage for more 9/11's.
The bottom line is the West is locked into a global and onging conflict with folks whose religion is the anthesis of American ideals and who have no intention of ever compromising.
And that, for what it's worth, is my view.
