For radio programming we had usb keys for security.

The main key was referred to as a Master and was used by a radio system operator to program a usb key that was called a Slave. A slave key had limited capabilities and certain features could be locked out by the system operator when he programmed it from the Master.
They quit using that nomenclature a few years ago.
