uses something called "standards based grading".
she explained that students get a 1,2,3 or 4 but you can't put a 0 in so if a student doesn't do the work at all they still get a 1 rather than a 0.
and they are forced to weigh homework the same as a test. so you could conceivably cheat on homework and get all 4's but then get a 1 on your tests but the tests don't really count for anything more so it doesn't matter.
and she said every assignment gets two grades one for participation and then the "real" grade on the assignment. so you get a 4 if you "participated" so it ends up being the equivalent of a C if you just put your name on the assignment.
she also said her school cherry-picks the students for the standardized testing. explained that you have to take 1 standardized test per core subject. she said if a poor student is moving around the district a lot they won't test them b/c they know they will be leaving at some point. said if a student has the equivalent of F's they won't test and will tutor the crap out of them and test them the following year.
she said that her first 3 years teaching she was all in and got to teach how she wanted and grade how she wanted and then they changed everything and gamed the system to essentially pass everyone.
their accreditation and money are based on getting kids to pass this so of course, they manipulate the system. not surprising at all really.
