support that conservatives had for increases in domestic surveillance to root out "terrorism" in the US.

"It doesn't affect me!" was the response.

Now the the definition of "terrorist" has been expanded, govts have mandated people to stay at home, shutter their business, cover their face etc., and more mandates will come fast and hard for the next emergency (I.e. climate change and mandates against excessive carbon emissions). That domestic surveillance program will be very very handy to the govt. "But it won't affect me!"
