Man called dangerous for damaging jail mattress
Anthony Peeler said he was only trying to make his nights more comfortable when he stuffed one mattress inside of another while awaiting trial in the Boone County Jail.
Boone County prosecutors, however, argue he committed a felony, for which he could face up to four years in prison.
Sheriff’s deputy Cody Hall writes in a probable cause statement that the 27-year-old from Kirksville is a “danger to the community or any other person because (he) knowingly forced one mattress inside another causing damage.”
In Hall’s affidavit, he writes that he was notified Peeler had damaged his mattress pad and went to investigate. After discovering Peeler’s mattress had a long rip in it and a second mattress was placed inside, Peeler was placed under arrest.
Peeler denied cutting the mattress, telling the deputy it was already ripped. He admitted stuffing a second mattress inside of it to give himself more cushion while sleeping.
“I asked Anthony why he didn’t just place the other mattress on top of his and he said he tried, but they slid off each other during the night,” Hall wrote.
Peeler has been in custody at the jail since early January. He was arrested on a Boone County charge of drug possession and a warrant out of Adair County for theft and drug charges. His bond on those cases is $5,000 for the Boone County charge and $10,000, cash only, on the Adair County charges.
