He can't walk it back fast enough, but the damage is done.
When you go on air and say "I am hearing from great sources that it's imminent" then you've reported it's imminent.
You don't get to walk it back by saying, "I'm not reporting anything, just telling you all the unconfirmed rumors I am hearing. 'Imminent' is the word of some super secret source that I'll never reveal. I'll just keep feeding you this BS while putting a disclaimer that it's not my info, but someone else's info, but not to trust it, but maybe trust it. That clear enough?"
In short: I want the glory of stating unverified rumors, but none of the blowback when it turns out not to be true.
