because it's common to refer to people in the most distinct / identifiable / recognizable way possible.
Normally that's a person's last name, but not always...
• "Norm" is more distinct and recognizable than "Stewart"...
• "Quin" is more distinct and recognizable than "Snyder"...
• "Cuonzo" is more distinct and recognizable than "Martin"...
etc...
And that's why most people refer to them that way.
