There are variants, but only one strain. It takes more than a decade of evolution to create a new strain.
And exposure once in most people provides a measure of immunity to all variants. That is why we don't have a flu pandemic every winter. We all have a measure of immunity to the variants of influenza going around.
If a new strain popped up, then we have the Spanish Flu scenario.
