saved several million Japanese lives, not to mention countless American lives.
The Japanese had demonstrated at Okinawa, Iwo Jima, Peleliu, and elsewhere, that it was extremely unlikely that they would surrender their mainland. The only thing that could have gotten them to surrender was the nuclear option.
And without that surrender, the next step would have been the American invasion of Japan, which would have resulted in a million or more American dead, and countless more Japanese dead.
There is no question that using the Atomic Bomb was the morally correct decision. God bless Harry Truman.
I wanted to make this clear, since there is a lot of misinformation and silliness on the board on this very important historical topic.
