A constant barrage of FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR brought fealty and devotion to their mandates and they amassed for themselves a large army of not only followers, but virtue warriors who would fight for them on the streets against the unmasked barbarians.
But now, when they finally decide to "follow science", these same warriors who have been trained to be the defenders of Science™ (i.e. the virtue of Science™) will now turn against them as traitors to the cause, a la Robespierre.
Similar situation on the vaccine debacle nationally, after months of continuing to pump fear and offering no freedom from that fear via vaccines, they were dumbfounded that folks were skeptical about vaccines. Now when they have decided to pivot, they will face the wrath of their army conscripted by that fear.
