Israel is dependent on the US for its basic survival, as a result it is a vassal state.

It serves a variety of purposes, mainly geopolitical as a tool for managing outcomes in the Middle East. It also specializes (along with the British) in conducting covert operations that the US does not want to have its fingerprints on. It is also useful for US domestic political purposes.
