I think the AD is hiring bad coaches because MU fans are fairweather and the investment very risky.
Even when we suck, I attend a few games a year and I watch every game. I still like MU basketball and I'm interested in our team. I don't think I'm the problem. The problem is the half of the arena that shows up when we're good and doesn't show up when we're mediocre because they think we're destined for 20 wins every year. If that latter group showed up, we might invest more in the program. If they showed up, we might be more attractive to recruits. If they showed up, we might attract better coaches. But they don't.
The AD can ramp up investment in the program and have blind faith that if they build it, fans will come. But as we've seen, fans will leave the second something begins to go wrong, and things go wrong. So what should the AD do? Invest and have blind faith that everything will go perfectly? Or stay cheap and keep the budget balanced and not worry much about it past that?
