don't prevent passage of airborne viruses. Most people don't wear them properly, some only half heartedly. A cartridge type full-face respirator that has been properly fit tested for the individual wearer might work, but only if it's equipped with the appropriate cartridge. If you want to get all sciencey, that's the way to do it.
