The word stupid is over used. The acceptance of implausible propaganda is usually attributable to ignorance and/or emotional needs/issues. Some times its as simple as demonstrating compliance with what they perceive as the behavior/belief patterns of a group. (i.e. trying to appear normal to the culture with which they identify). Many strident nationalist demonstrate this behavior. But of course they same could be said about strident environmentalists or animal rights activists.
Of course some of the people that claim to accept the propaganda don't actually believe it. Instead they think they can use the propaganda as a tool to accomplish unstated objectives. A word of caution to those folks. Propaganda has consequences. Things can spin out of control and what they thought was a useful tactic produces adverse consequences.
