There only needs to be two countries, but three might make more sense. The Left Coast States could be a separate country or join with the Northeast States to form one country. The other 40'ish states would remain as one country as we see pretty much eye to eye on how things should be. And I think whole states would need to decide which country to join. So in MO you might still have STL and KC controlled by liberals, but they would be living in the conservative country. Or they could decide to all/mostly move to the liberal countries, it would be up to them. Same for conservatives living in California.
None of the new countries should be the United States Of America. It should all be new. The liberal countries will write their own constitution with all their touchy-feely bullsh*t in it. I suspect the conservative country would keep the US Constitution more of less intact as it is.
There would be a period of 5 years for every citizen to decide which country they want to live in and after 5 years they become permanent citizens of that country. Each country would decide what to do about non-citizens in their country and if they would become citizens and then all non-citizens would have the same choice to make as citizens about where they want to live.
The 5 year period would also be used to establish trade agreements between the new countries, as well as other nations. It would also be used to break up the military and each of the branches between to two countries, or to work out an alliance to keep the military as is and just fund it from each of the new countries.
The national debt is a sticking point. Probably splitting it up per capita would be the fairest way to do it.
I suspect the countries would not want to share a currency like the EU, but that is a possibility, but without the economic controls of the EU (which would make it not a very good idea).
It's surprisingly easy actually. You just do it. And I am 100% on board with that happening.
