Formerly an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan for the prior three seasons and had a short stint as the associate head coach at Compton Community College in 1996. The next season Harvey was elevated to Associate Head Coach at MU.
"I'm very excited to be a part of a Missouri basketball program that has a great tradition and plays in such a competitive league. I was fortunate enough to have a few coaching options to choose from - almost like I was being recruited - and I chose Missouri for a number of reasons. The most important factor was Quin Snyder. He's someone who has great energy and he's someone I can work with and work for and develop my talents, as well. He's what I was looking for in a boss.
Missouri also has an excellent athletic director, a great support staff, and it's a great basketball market.
All of those elements give us a great opportunity for success. I look forward to building the program and trying to win a national championship," Harvey said.
This was done in large part to land Robert Whaley and Jeffrey Ferguson, both of whom lived with Benton Harbor High School coach Lou Harvey. Lou Harvey was Tony Harvey's father.
Hoopscoop magazine ranked MU's 2001 class fourth-best in the nation behind Florida, UCLA and top-ranked Memphis. It included Whaley, Ferguson, Najeeb Echols, and Duane John.
"This group we have right now is laying the groundwork for the type of team we want to be," Snyder said. "When the next group of young guys comes, we'll have a team that can teach them how we play. The kids we have coming in are very capable of making that transition and being impactful for us."
I think you can make a reasonable case that the downfall of MU basketball can be traced back to that event.
