a nomination to the Merchant Marine Academy and an alternate nomination to West Point, but ended up not going to either...by choice.
I received my nomination from my congressman and yes I had met him several times during my process; which concluded with an interview that lasted about 2 hours with a committee of about 10 people, chosen by the congressman. The committee was made up of a couple of grads from service academies (I think I had an air force colonel on mine), business people, educators, political types, a representative from the congressman's office, etc.
different members of congress might do things differently, but I suspect it's fairly standard.
the whole process was pretty demanding. I regret to this day not taking the Merchant Marine Academy slot. but such is life.
