I have always been asked for an ID for a hotel (in the US or outside the US)
I doubt you rent anyone something without a credit report, a landlord reference AND some from of ID. IF you do, you would be the dumbest landlord on the planet...once inside your property as a tenant, the law favors them if they stop paying, cause damage etc...
