True story.

Walton turns up for the first day of practice his senior season with his hair tied in a pony tail. He tells Wooden he wants to express his freedom and one of those ways is by wearing his hair long.

Wooden responds "I respect that William and I fully support your need to express your freedom. You won't be a member of my basketball team but I fully support you in your other pursuits".

Walton got a haircut.
