Oakland Resilient Families began with Mayor Libby Schaaf’s pledge to bring a guaranteed income pilot to Oakland when she joined Mayors for a Guaranteed Income as a founding mayor in the summer of 2020. Oakland Resilient Families is 100% funded through philanthropic donations and run by a collaboration of local community-based organizations.
Family Independence Initiative
Oakland-based national non-profit Family Independence Initiative (FII) serves as the implementing partner. FII was founded in Oakland 20 years ago with the belief that that society has underestimated the potential and resourcefulness of communities with limited incomes.
Mayors for a Guaranteed Income
Mayors for a Guaranteed Income (MGI) grew out of the groundbreaking Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration (SEED) led by former Mayor Michael Tubbs. MGI connects Oakland Resilient Families with dozens of other cities for research collaboration and technical assistance.
Oakland Thrives
Originating from the Youth Ventures Joint Powers Authority, Oakland Thrives (OT) is a public/private partnership between the City of Oakland, Alameda County, OUSD, Kaiser Permanente, and community. OT provides backbone support and coordination for Oakland Resilient Families.
