Has the FBI ever prevented a crime?

The FBI investigates terrorism, counterintelligence, cyber crime, weapons of mass destruction, civil-rights, white-collar crime, violent crimes, organized crime and public corruption.
But all of these are after crimes are committed. They take criminals off the streets after solving their particular crime.
Supposedly the FBI has looked at or closely surveilled people that ultimately committed horrific crimes. The Boston bombers come to mind and now the person who killed ten people in Colorado. But again they did not stop the crime.
I was thinking today that one of the great intelligence failures of our time was the flight school not notifying the FBI when one of the Saudis that ultimately crashed one of the planes in to the pentagon said "he did not need to know how to land a plane".
The question begs if the flight school had reported this information to the FBI would the terrorist act of crashing planes into the World trade center, pentagon and flight 93 that ultimately crashed into a field in Pennsylvania been prevented? My instinct says had it been reported the FBI ultimately would have done nothing to prevent 911. I repeat nothing.
So my question is has the FBI ever prevented a crime other than taking a criminal off the street for crimes already committed?
Are the reported failed terror plots that the media occasionally reports even true?
I would appreciated thoughtful insightful answers to something that has troubled me for some time.
