And the fact that we agreed to $4+ million/year (which was considered well above his market value at the time) strongly suggests we were scrambling behind the scenes to get the last remaining option that would satisfy the fan base.
So it's entirely plausible that Matter's version of the story is correct...
Sterk — who is notoriously cheap with the BB and FB programs so he can over-fund the teams no one cares about — was foolishly trying to save a few bucks on the most important investment an AD can make, the head football coach. The BoC was likely divided about that, since most of them are rubber-stamping fools who don't care, but at least one of them thought "oh HELL no" and took actions into his own hands by leaking Sterk's list to the media. It worked, and we ended up with Drink instead of the guy at Air Force or whoever else Sterk was considering.
Other versions of the story that contradict Matter's reporting seem like spin and revisionist history from the AD.
