It is called vetting a candidate. When you are paying someone millions of dollars to be the face of your university these are not tough things to do.
These were not secrets, the AD at LSU suggested to the president that they fire Miles in '13. Either ask a few questions yourself or hire someone to do a background check.
Don't get me wrong I love ku looking foolish but Long was in such a hurry to hire his buddy he did not ask simple questions that should always be asked.
