I think the fact that he fought against it so loudly (and as a "mean" person) gave the cancel culture more evidence that getting rid of those people (or directly calling them out) was needed, and took cancel culture mainstream...to the point of social media shutting them down, and companies much more openly messaging that as well. Trumps rhetoric united those against him.

I don't disagree with Romney/McCain, but they were being pushed out of the party slowly anyways, and the party was heading towards a smaller government party (see Tea Party), and Trumped flipped that message....IMO.
