For some it is a belief that if you take profit motive out, the service becomes cheaper because that margin is removed. for others it is about if everyone can act the same way, things will be improved...or we need government to protect us from evil.
But if you watch campaigns closely, they really talk about how there is this huge problem (healthcare costs, virus, retirement, drugs, immigration, terrorism, environment) and only a coordinated central government can solve it....but only from a particular party....and people slowly rid their freedom for the "greater good"....because others around the world are as well.
