with a lie because they are unable to confront the amount of harm they have done to themselves and others based on it - admitting the truth is just too painful.
Instead, they will work together with others to keep the fantasy going, just to avoid that Come To Jesus moment with themselves when they finally have to take responsibility for what they have done and what they are doing.
And no matter the depth of evil they may eventually pursue in this flight from themselves, that moment of self-reckoning will come.
In the interim may God have mercy on the rest of us, who must deal with these tortured souls...
