because it gets views. I don't see it as so much a D vs R, but an elitist vs the common people. Members of both parties do these things. They are so accustomed to being above the the things that affect middle and lower class citizens, they don't even think how it is going to look. I would think these politicians would try to be seen doing something during a crisis and score political points.
