Alden came in initially as Norm's boss. Shortly thereafter Norm stepped down/was pushed out either because he couldn't work with Alden or Alden felt it necessary to secure a new arena. Either way they were not on speaking terms for several years thereafter.
Quin Snyder quit in the middle of the season, after being informed by MU's play by play announcer that regardless of what happened from that point he would not be retained. He had not been on speaking terms with Alden for quite some time by that point.
Mike Anderson left MU via text message, and snuck out the back door of the arena after addressing the team. He took what at best was a lateral move after exploring several other coaching opportunities leading up to that decision. Alden was entirely blindsided by this development.
Alden hired Haith despite what normal due diligence in the industry would have revealed to be an investigation at Miami. After forcing him to accept an NCAA suspension their relationship degraded to again non-speaking terms and Haith surprisingly left MU for a vacancy at lowly Tulsa.
In his final coaching search, Alden hired someone who would not have have been on the list of considered candidates for any other major conference job in the nation. Someone who was currently a D2 coach and last associated with D1 as an assistant in the prior century. He was the only candidate to receive a formal interview.
Every one of those guys essentially ended their MU tenures on non-speaking terms with their boss. We can assess each of them independently, but there is a rather obvious common thread between them. In Alden's first coaching search he interviewed 4 candidates: Quin and Larry Drew went on to be NBA head coaches and Self and Calipari went on to win NCAA championships. In his final coaching search he was interviewing D2 candidates.
