Acknowledging it would be an appropriate first step

Even the major oil companies have done this. Many Republicans have not. Regardless of climate change, we cannot rely on fossil fuels that much longer simply because the resource (oil in particular) is finite. The shale oil revolution bought us 20-25 years on petroleum front but even that's going to run its course in the not too distant future.
