For a lot of reasons, and right to make the switch to Bazelak.
The lack of practices really hampered Bazelak coming back from the knee injury. He looked hesitant out there. Drink helped him by creating a no pressure situation for him in the first two games. You could see how Bazelak wasn’t comfortable in the pocket in the first game, but every time he came to the sidelines, Drink was talking to him, coaching him up. Bazelak learned and got more comfortable. The last game was his breakout.
Talking about dropped passes, the receivers dropped his passes too in the first two games, but it wasn’t just because they were to different, maybe not as sure-handed receivers. There were three major differences: receivers weren’t as open as they were against LSU, so he was zipping it in there. Also, he adjusted his throws better against LSU. When he doesn’t have to put mustard on the ball because guys were wide open, he started softening his throws so they became more catchable. Last, he isn’t hesitant any more about running. He’s making quicker reads and taking runs on offense that punish defenses. That last item is directly attributable to Drink coaching him on the sideline when he DIDN’T do it in the first two games.
The big question is for me is how will he react when guys are covered and there aren’t easy running lanes when we face good defenses. That will tell us a lot more than we know today about just how good he can be.
