Barr is from the area and still practices law there.
Short version from memory...
Kyle lives 20 minutes from downtown Kenosha. It is a short drive across the border but is considered a part of the community by the people in that community. He went to go help out after the devastation in his community, much of it by outsiders, like the guys who were trying to harm him. The 3 he shot were from about 3 hours away if I recall.
He had been there cleaning graffiti off of a school wall when a local business owner asked the volunteers at the school for help in protecting his car dealership which had already suffered signifcant damage the night before. Kyle volunteered again, bringing his medical first aid kit (he is also a lifeguard) in order to help anyone who might get injured.
You can read how he was in the process of tending to the medical care of injured protesters when he was accosted by the sociopaths in the mob and chased by gun wielding aggressors, a few of him whom he later shot.
