Many places are "policed" by private security companies already.

It's just another example of a poorly run government program. Republicans have no problem fighting against other poorly run government programs, why not the police too? Unfortunately, this is being pushed by the liberals because the swell came from a social issue and not necessarily a fiscal issue. If it came from the fiscal side, republicans would be pushing to defund the police.
