You are correct about it being an illusion.

All of the assumptions pre pandemic are gone. There are no givens fans will return in the numbers as before. First off fans disposable income have taken a huge hit. (2) not everyone will be comfortable returning until they feel safe (3) most universities that have chased the almighty dollar to the exclusion of their fans will learn some hard lessons when their money stream is reduced and that is coming. (4) already university presidents and athletic directors see the storm clouds and are not only reeling from the uncertainties but are shaken to their foundations at the speed of the decline.
We as fans see the lack of leadership across the board. Sports that were once apolitical and unifying is gone and the administrators do not see the harm in this by making it political. The amount of tone deafness in allowing sports to become political from them on this subject surprises even me and I am jaded.
Politics is forcing people to chose sides and that is bad for the business of college athletics.
The fallout will be breath taking in scope.
A lot of people wanted college realignment. Well, self preservation will be the catalyst going forward.
A lot of non revenue athletic programs are out of business, they just don’t know it yet. You will see a major deescalation in the facilities arm race going forward. Clearly a paradigm shift is occurring before our eyes that is not yet clearly defined or understood except everything going forward will be reduced in scope. Everything.
Nothing will remain unscathed.
Rebounding tiger says: "And when they 'welcome back' all their fans and find they have about 1/3 - 1/2 of what they used to have, they'll just be amazed, 'who could have known?'"
Prescient indeed.
