They often do give an opportunity where none had previously existed. The bigger issue which nobody here seems to realize is that once you arrive on campus, an athlete (especially for a major sport) has one job - compete in that sport. Academics are secondary in terms of time commitment which force many if not most athletes into less viable degree programs. I would not mind seeing colleges re-establishing their admittance standards across the board to include athletes and giving football players that cannot meet the standard an option of competing in a minor league system like baseball has where they can be paid immediately. That would also resolve the issue of paying college athletes.
